Prof. Anna Barney

Co-Investigator

Anna Barney is Professor of Biomedical Acoustic Engineering in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton. Her primary research interest is the production of sound in speech and singing, including cases where the voice is damaged by a pathological condition of surgical intervention. She listens to changes in speech sounds and speech patterns and analyses these changes using digital signal processing techniques to identify and extract relevant features to assist in diagnosis and disease monitoring. She has also worked on the sounds made by muscles as they contract and more recently she has developed an interest in how the sounds made by the interaction between air and lung tissue can be used for diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory disease.
