John Wynne obtained his PhD in Sound Art from Goldsmiths College in 2006. His diverse, research-led practice includes large-scale sound installations in galleries and public spaces, delicate sculptural works, flying radios and award-winning ‘composed documentaries’ that hover on the borders between documentation and abstraction, sound and music. His Installation for 300 speakers, Pianola and vacuum cleaner, developed during an AHRC-funded research residency, became the first piece of sound art in the Saatchi collection and won him the 2010 British Composer Award for Sonic Art. 

John’s work with linguists and speakers of endangered languages includes a project with click languages in the Kalahari Desert and another with one of Canada’s indigenous languages, Gitxsanimaax. A year-long ACE-funded residency at one of the world’s leading centres for heart and lung transplants alongside photographer Tim Wainwright led to a book, a 24-channel installation and a half-hour commission for BBC Radio 3. I Am Not the Cancer, a multi-channel sound and video installation based on women with metastatic breast cancer, showed in 9 European capitals and inside the European Parliament in Brussels.

His work for Scottish theatre director Graham McClaren’s critically acclaimed production of Andromache in Toronto was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Sound Design and Composition. This led directly to a series of site-specific installations using only very high and very low frequency sounds and to Nocturnal, a site-specific multi-channel camera obscure installation in collaboration with filmmaker Atom Egoyan. 

John is currently artist-in-residence at the Royal Free Hospital in London, working with liver, kidney and pancreas transplant patients and live donors for an exhibition in the Hunterian Museum at the the Royal College of Surgeons, London in late 2016.
