Rupert Cox is a senior lecturer in visual anthropology in the department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester. He has written books on the idea of the Zen Arts, Copying Culture and Material Heritage in Japan for Routledge Press and about forms of representation that lie ‘Beyond Text’ in anthropology for Manchester University Press. He works on the anthropology of sound, investigating questions about the politics of noise from perspectives of acoustic science, sound studies and sound art, and focuses on projects in Japan. Having worked on the ‘Air Pressure’ project that led to an exhibition and CD, he is now using sound recordings and film to investigate the idea of military aircraft as a ‘Sound of Freedom’ focusing on the US military bases in Okinawa. The Sound of freedom monograph will be the basis of a publication for Bloomsbury Press in 2017.
